Softube drops 32-bit support

In order to keep on delivering plug-ins with stellar sound quality, Softube will be focusing on 64-bit plug-ins only from here and on. This means that our future releases will only contain 64-bit plug-ins.

We do this so that we can put all our efforts into making great new products. Maintaining development tools for the 32-bit platform is becoming increasingly difficult and time-consuming.

Many software users and companies have already made the move to 64-bit, so chances are that you won’t be affected by this at all. But like any technology shift, it’s one that’s painless for some and a big headache for others.

What’s the difference between 32-bit and 64-bit?
The biggest difference lies in the amount of memory that can be used. The practical limitation of available RAM in a 32-bit process is 4 GB. 64-bit software can use a significantly larger chunk. There are also advantages when it comes to CPU and processing power.

How can I tell if I’m affected?
Most reasonably modern operating systems and CPUs are 64-bit. However, software can run in 32-bit mode on a 64-bit platform, so if you’re running a 32-bit DAW, you will be affected in the sense that we will no longer release any 32-bit updates after the current 2.4.74 version.

Pro Tools 10 is an example of a DAW which is only available in 32-bit.

If you’re unsure whether or not you’re running a 32-bit DAW, the ‘About’ box or menu can usually give you the answer. If you can’t find the info, please check with your DAW manufacturer.

How can I keep on using my Softube products?
The first and most obvious way is to make sure you run a compatible system. Please check our System Requirements here.

If you can’t (or for some reason, don’t want to) do the transition to 64-bit, you can of course keep on using the current version of your Softube plug-ins. The latest (and last) 32-bit versions are available to download here.

If you haven’t already done so, we recommend that you download the 32-bit versions and store them safely for future use. We also plan to keep on having the 32-bit versions available for download via our website.
